Anti-Universal Health Care guy named Surgeon General

CNN's Sanjay Gupta, who inaccurately attacked Michael Moore over Sicko, is going to be our Surgeon General. Kind of dashes one's hopes about universal health care, let alone his general competence. See Krugman for details.

Does the Surgeon General even have anything to do with healthcare policy (as in insurance coverage). My understanding of the position is basically an advisor on matters of public health, and while health insurance could be construed to fall under that banner, I wouldn't necessarily assume that his voice on such an important issue would be the loudest. It's not even a cabinet position (reports to the assistant to a cabinet secretary)!

That being said, I still don't like the choice, but more due to his ties to drug companies and the fact that there *must* be more qualified doctors than someone who has spent the majority of the last decade working on a media career (this being my personal impression having done no research into his credentials ;) ).

You're right that this guy isn't the one in charge of healthcare policy. I'm looking at it more from the perspective of seeing who Obama picks to discern what his policy goals will be. Daschle as HHS Secretary is a little more promising.

I feel his celebrity may help protect him if he says anything 'controversial,' like Elders' 'teach masturbation.'

I didn't realize the Elder gods were so progressive. Then again, Cthulhu does have all those tentacles, so he can't really be much of a prude.
