Review/plot:
With the regular art team taking a break, this is a downtime issue focusing mainly on the Vision. We've been seeing the vaguest of hints that the Vision is romantically interested in Crystal, or at least that her interest in the Black Knight is bothering him in some way. In this issue he's reacting to the fact that Crystal recently told him that she loves the Black Knight. And that has him flying around trying to get advice from other Avengers without him being specific enough for them to really help.

In the process he observes the Swordsman recovering from his coma and Taylor Madison breaking up with Hercules.

The Vision even talks to Crystal...

...and gets a platonic kiss from her.

He's later approached by Deathcry (who is apparently just hanging around the Mansion). She puts the moves on him.

He says he feels nothing from the kiss, and gets so angry about feeling no emotions that he punches a wall (the irony is surely intentional).

A fine line needs to be walked with the Vision at this point. Too far in one direction and he is just a machine, not really interesting except as a background character. Too far in the other direction and he is basically back to how he was pre-Byrne. I'd be totally fine with that, but that doesn't seem to be where Marvel wanted to go with him at this time. So he's left in this state where we're supposed to be perpetually wondering if he has emotions. Which, of course he does, so the whole thing is kind of tedious.

At the end of this issue, someone kidnaps Luna.

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Pushed back in publication time a bit due to the Bloodties crossover. Luna is kidnapped this issue, but we'll learn that she's been replaced by a Genoshan mutate shapeshifter. So time can pass between this issue or next, but there probably shouldn't be any "Luna" appearances in between (unless absolutely necessary).

  • Hercules and Taylor met in Avengers #349.
  • Talking to Henry Pym, the Vision mentions Pym's creation of Ultron, from Avengers #54-55, Ultron's creation of the Vision, from Avengers #57-58, and Pym's journey through the Vision's body in Avengers #93.
  • The Vision also mentions "the failure of our mutual marriages". Pym and the Wasp's marriage broke up after Avengers #213. The Vision and the Scarlet Witch's marriage effectively ended after the Vision was dismantled in West Coast Avengers #42-45.
  • We found out that the Vision and Scarlet Witch's children weren't real in Avengers West Coast #50-52.

Comments

Shocked that the seeds of Bloodties being planted here don't merit more than a 1 on the historical significance rating. I mean who can forget the introduction of the Unforgiven that occurs during Bloodties?

The art here looks like the house style they used in giveaway comics.

I don't know what Deathcry means when she mentions Jocasta here. IIRC she once showed an interest in the Vision, but he did not even realize that.

Cortez talking about how beautiful Luna is and how attractive her family before grabbing her is makes him sound like a pedophile.
