Avengers #53

Issue(s): Avengers #53
Cover Date: Jun 68
Title: "In battle joined!"
Credits:
Roy Thomas - Writer
John Buscema - Penciler
George Tuska - Inker

Review/plot:
The Avengers act like real idiots...

...which i originally dismissed as Roy Thomas writing, but it's actually part of a plot to make Magneto think that they are disorganized and distrusting of the X-Men. Then Magneto brainwashes the X-Men...

...forcing them to fight the Avengers, so it doesn't matter anyway.

But the Toad gets sick of all the abuse he gets from Magneto...

...so he betrays him, setting Magneto's island to self-destruct and then fleeing with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, leaving Magneto behind.

If John Buscema wants to draw Magneto and the X-Men, i'm not going to stop him, even if he insists on letting Roy Thomas write the story.

Quality Rating: C

Historical Significance Rating: 2 - advances the Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch plot a little - they are no longer with Magneto but not rejoining the Avengers.

Chronological Placement Considerations: Continues directly from Uncanny X-Men #45.

Tony Isabella has a letter in #53.

Again I like Roy's writing and always have. Buscema's art was awesome of course. I really liked the Toad's worm turns bit because it was long overdue.

This is Beast's first appearance in Avengers. Many prefer him as an Avenger instead of being a X-Man.

Nope, he was in Avengers #3. :p
