Captain Marvel #24

Issue(s): Captain Marvel #24
Cover Date: Jan 73
Title: "Death in high places!"
Credits:
Marv Wolfman - Writer
Wayne Boring - Penciler
Ernie Chan - Inker

Review/plot:
To understand my disappointment with this issue, you have to start by looking at the cover. Ok, that is some Gil Kane craziness. That dude has a giant head, so big that its gravity is forcing Captain Marvel's head to slam into it even though CM is trying to punch.

And look at that cover copy. Dr. Mynde! Man or monster -- or BOTH? ("Android-Man" seems to answer that question, but never mind that.)

So what do we get in the book? This guy.

Like, who cares?

Wayne Boring does attempt to provide some sex appeal with Mynde's assistant, Madame Synn (i just wanted to post this panel for the "change into something more proper" line).

But it's not enough!

So let's instead focus on what an entitled ass Rick Jones is. Poor Captain Marvel is trapped in his body, and Rick just refuses to let him out unless he's in mortal danger.

And not just "i'm being attacked by some soldiers" danger.

It takes a bola-headpunch combo to knock some sense into him.

Otherwise Mar-vell can just rot in the Negative Zone (or whatever it is in the post-Skrull/Kree War status quo).

Both Mynde and Synn die at the end of the story (Synn jumps in front of a bullet meant for Captain Marvel, and then Mynde kills himself).

Chronological Placement Considerations: N/A

References:

  • Dr. Mynde's plot involves Rick Jones' Avengers ID card, which Rick threw out in Captain Marvel #17, but Mynde fished it out of the trash.
  • There's also a panel showing all of Rick's various partners to date. Look at the life this kid has led! What's with the chip on his shoulder?

Comments

Marv Wolfman continues the Golden Age Captain Marvel references: Dr. Mynde=Mr. Mind, Benjamin Savannah=Dr. Sivana.

Wolfman stated later he didn't want to do this book, but he didn't want to risk getting fired over refusal.
