Daredevil #222

Issue(s): Daredevil #222
Cover Date: Sep 85
Title: "Fear in a handful of dust..."
Credits:
Denny O'Neil - Writer
David Mazzucchelli - Penciler
Kim DeMulder - Inker
Ralph Macchio - Editor

Review/plot:
I don't know why the winning Perlin/DeMulder art team was broken up over in Defenders, but here's DeMulder doing some fill-in inking on Mazzucchelli. The art isn't as good as Mazzucchelli inking himself or DeMulder inking Perlin, but it's generally good.

Probably the most significant event this issue is that Foggy shaves his mustache.

In typical Foggy fashion he blunders into asking Matt if he sees anything different. Matt tells him "I'm sure you did what you thought was right."

The actual plot of the issue involves Glorianna O'Breen getting stuck on a plane where an attempted terrorist hijacking goes bad. Glorianna bravely jumps the gunman, and a stray bullet hits a canister that contains fear gas (held by a corrupt scientist with the awesome name "Dr. Ephesus Sadd").

Daredevil and Black Widow fight their way through swamp hazards and some interested parties at the site of the plane crash, and rescue Glorianna.

A story doesn't have to be "significant" to be good, and this was enjoyable.

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Daredevil has just returned from Europe at the beginning of this issue and probably shouldn't appear anywhere else in between this issue and last (although we don't actually see him getting off a plane and we could fit in another appearance if we really needed to, but so far we don't). Pushing this back in publication time a bit so Daredevil #223 can coincide with Secret Wars II #3.

References:

  • The Fear gas was from Mr. Fear (the Black Widow calls him "Dr. Fear", and i'm going to pretend that reflects her disdain of super-villains and not a mistake on O'Neil's part). The footnote tells us that he "was one of DD's greatest foes, first seen way back in Daredevil #6".

Comments

The title of this story was later used a tagline in house ads for DC's Sandman title in 1988.

Some panels here have a distinctly Gene Colan-feel to them.

The title is a reference to T.S. Eliot's poem the Waste Land. That's probably what the DC ads were referring to.

According to an interview, Kim DeMulder left Defenders to work on Nick Fury vs. SHIELD, which then got delayed.
