Defenders #39

Issue(s): Defenders #39
Published Date: Sep 76
Title: "Riot in cellblock 12!"
Credits:
Steve Gerber - Writer
Sal Buscema - Penciler
Klaus Janson - Inker

Review/plot:
The Defenders, under Nighthawk's leadership while Dr. Strange is meditating in order to discover the cause of his intermittent power losses (which is not a tie-in with next month's issue of Doctor Strange, where he loses the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme; the reason for this power loss will be shown in Defenders annual #1), find the Valkyrie and bail her out of jail as she stops a prison riot from the inside.

This issue has a very misleading cover, which seems to indicate that the Defenders will be fighting Clea, something that does not happen at all in the issue. See the scene below, which comes as close as anything in the issue to the scene depicted on the cover.

Quality Rating: B

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Luke Cage seems to have returned to Dr. Strange's house with the rest of the Defenders after the events of last issue, meaning that no other Luke Cage appearances should occur between then and now. This issue has been placed earlier than its published date in order to accommodate Luke Cage appearances in Power Man.

The title refers to the movie "Riot in Cell Block 8(or 10? I can't remember)".
