Marvel Comics Presents #99 (Wolverine)

Issue(s): Marvel Comics Presents #99 (Wolverine story only)
Cover Date: 1992
Title: "Hauntings"
Credits:
Howard Mackie - Script
Rob Liefeld - Plot
Jim Valentino - Penciler
Bud LaRosa - Inker
Mark Powers - Assistant Editor
Terry Kavanagh - Editor

Review/plot:
Apparently any scrap of paper marked by Rob Liefeld was too precious to throw away, so we have this 8 pager that was plotted by Liefeld but drawn by Jim Valentino and scripted by Howard Mackie (you win some and you lose some). This story actually leads into next issue, which is an all-Nightmare issue (as if D'Spayre also appearing in this issue's Ghost Rider story wasn't enough).

This issue is (of course) mostly a dream.

The funniest thing to me is that when Wolverine sees Nightmare, he's like, what is this goofy stuff. This isn't scary like my real nightmares.

Wolverine dreams about Mariko and Professor Xavier. The former tries to kill him.

The latter asks why he killed all the X-Men.

Then he wakes up.

If Liefeld had anything to do with the story that follows next issue, it isn't apparent from that issue's credits. So this probably just would have been a standalone story where Liefeld drew some dream stuff. I almost wish he did draw it, because his art is certainly more nightmarish.

Quality Rating: D

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Mariko appears in Wolverine's nightmare, but there's no indication that she's meant to be alive or dead at this time (this story was published before her death). This story continues, not necessarily directly, in Marvel Comics Presents #100.

Comments

I have the impression that more than the plot Liefeld did the layouts of this story. The panels and the poses of the characters seem to me far more his style than Valentino's.
