Issue(s): Marvel Premiere #31
Cover Date: Aug 76
Title: "Birthday"
Credits:
Bill Mantlo - Writer
Keith Giffen - Penciler
Klaus Janson - Inker

Review/plot:
Woodgod is a genetic experiment created by his scientist parents in a small town. He's got goat legs. When the locals find out about him, they attack the scientists and accidentally release a nerve gas that wipes out everyone in the town.

He's subsequently attacked by soldiers.

Woodgod has not fully developed mentally, and he runs around like a mentally ill person trying to figure out what's going on.

The story isn't really resolved; he's just left wandering this poisoned, dead town.

Woodgod is a bizarre character that persisted only via Bill Mantlo's force of will, appearing unbidden in a few random comics written by Mantlo before fading into obscurity.

The art in this issue isn't that great. Klaus Janson does not compliment early Keith Giffen.

Comments

Ah, Woodgod. I have a soft spot for Woodgod.
I like to imagine that Jeff Lemire's Sweetooth is what Woodgod would have become had Mantlo owned the character.

PUT WOODGOD IN AVENGERS 3 MARVEL!

The story may have been inspired by The Andromeda Strain (1969).
