Cover Date: Apr 78
Title: "The measure of a man!"
Credits:
Chris Claremont - Writer
John Byrne - Penciler
Bob Wiacek - Inker

Review/plot:
Coming way too soon after their appearance in Howard the Duck, Dakimh the Enchanter and his apprentice Jennifer Kale show up again along with the Man-Thing.

Peter Parker actually finds the Man-Thing trapped in a traveling circus (run by an Amos Jardine)...

...and frees him and borrows a plane service usually used by Curt Conners to return him to the Everglades (which is interesting, but a bit weird). The plane crashes, as all planes in comics do, and Spidey is stuck stranded in the swamp with the Man-Thing. Then we get into the thing with Dakimh, who is being attacked by an entity called D'Spayre...

...who is kind of like Nightmare but not quite.

Spider-Man eventually prevails by overcoming his negative emotions or whatever.

D'Spayre is dragged out every so often by writers who want to write a heavy handed symbolic psychological story. He's not a favorite of mine. And he's got a stupid name.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 3 - first D'Spayre

Chronological Placement Considerations: Spider-Man appears here during a large gap between Amazing Spider-Man #170-171, where a lot of his sundry guest appearances have been placed. Man-Thing and Jennifer Kale appear here after leaving Howard the Duck in Howard the Duck #24.

  • Connors doesn't have to pay for the plane ride thanks to "Dane Gavin and the New York Ecological History Museum". There's a reference to Giant-Size Man-Thing #2.

Crossover: N/A

Thanks, Midnighter. Added him.

Given that D'Spayre is created by Claremont and Byrne, it's odd that Claremont would use him again immediately after Byrne leaves X-Men.
