Review/plot:
With Misty Knight and D.W. Griffith kidnapped by Ward Meachum's goons, Power Man & Iron Fist are trying to figure out their next move when a package arrives for Danny. It's the glowing sphere that was stolen from him. When he touches it, his soul is drawn out of his body into the gem, which floats away to Master Khan.

Dr. Claire Temple says that if he doesn't get his soul back, he'll be dead in 24 hours.

With the help of Colleen Wing, Bob Diamond, El Aguila, and Rafael Scarfe...

...they invade Rand-Meachum Industries.

In a nice touch, Misty is able to free herself and D.W., so they don't have to sit around waiting to be rescued.

Power Man gets a rematch against Commanche and Shades...

...and Iron Fist faces Fera again. But Fera wants to fight a whole Iron Fist, so she leads him to his soul.

There, Iron Fist discovers Master Khan.

Luckily, Cage is able to finish his fight and join Iron Fist in time to rescue him from Khan's sorcery.

While Khan is distracted, Fera leaps in and steals the necklace that binds her to him.

Fist gets his soul back, but Khan teleports back to K'un-Lun. Fera decides not to fight Iron Fist... this time. Ward Meachum is captured and arrested.

Not much time for character development in this all-action issue, but it was fun.

Quality Rating: B

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: This should probably take place before Iron Man #177 since the Heroes For Hire are relatively calm in that issue whereas at the start of this issue they are very concerned about Misty and D.W.'s kidnapping.

References:

  • This being an anniversary issue, there's a retelling of Iron Fist's origin from Marvel Premiere #15, and Luke Cage's from Hero For Hire #1, as well as the formation of their partnership from Power Man #48-49 and Power Man & Iron Fist #50. No actual footnotes are given for any of these flashbacks.

Comments

Busiek stated in Comics Journal#216 that he wanted to have the team split up and go on separate adventures for a while, only to come back and find that their lawyers have hired other super-heroes, forcing them to be unwilling team leaders. However, Busiek got fired with this issue because although the sales slide with the last writer stopped, the numbers weren't going back up. Busiek's subsequent stories were fill-ins because his replacement wasn't meeting deadlines.
