Review/plot:
Power Pack are taken to a baseball game by their Gramps, and they stop a washed-up old player (and a hero of Jack's)...

...from setting off explosives that would have prevented a new hitter from breaking up his old record.

The kids have to interfere with the game a bit in order to prevent the explosives from getting set...

...and they make up for it later by interfering again in the other direction.

It's a simple enough story, but it's well written and nicely drawn.

This panel set off my caricature alarms, but i can't recognize anyone except possibly Mike Carlin (in the bottom left with the glasses?). Whenever you see that many shaggy looking dudes, it's probably Marvel creators, however.

Quality Rating: B

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Pushed back in publication time a bit to make room for Power Pack dependencies on Thor and Fantastic Four in issues #15 and #16.

References:

  • Alex says that despite Beautiful Dreamer (actually, he calls her "Dream Weaver") wiping their parents' memories after the events of Uncanny X-Men #195, they are still "kinda nervous".
  • The last time their Gramps took them on an outing, in in Power Pack #9, they encountered Snake-Eyes.

Comments

This story was probably a reference to Pete Rose breaking Ty Cobb's hitting record(though if he hadn't broken it by that point, he was really close).

Having Jack shout "Mr. Bates" is a little racy for a kid's book:-)
