Issue(s): Uncanny X-Men #110
Cover Date: Apr 78
Title: "The "X"-sanction!"
Credits:
Chris Claremont - Writer
Dave Cockrum & Tony DeZuniga - Penciler
Tony DeZuniga - Inker

Review/plot:
Cockrum gets thanked for a "welcome art assist". This issue was a fill-in that was intended to get the series back on schedule. It was planned before Byrne took over. Because it's a fill-in, it's one of the few early Claremont issues not reprinted in Classic X-Men.

The issue starts with the X-Men tradition of playing baseball during their downtime issues. This one gets a little violent, though.

Then Warhawk attacks, trapping most of the team in the Danger Room. Once they actually make it to Warhawk, they beat him relatively easily (he's described as a second-rate Colossus).

Warhawk was being ordered about by a faceless voice. It will turn out to be Sebastian Shaw.

  • Xavier comments on Jean's growing power, specifically how she fought Firelord in Uncanny X-Men #105.
  • Nightcrawler attempts teleporting with another person (Wolverine) like he did with Lilandra in Uncanny X-Men #107.
  • At one point Storm is captured in an enclosed space. Banshee makes Cyclops aware that she is claustrophobic, which Banshee learned during the fight with Black Tom and the Juggernaut in Uncanny X-Men #102-103.
  • In the Danger Room, the X-Men have to fight the latest version of Colosso, the robot from Uncanny X-Men #22. Cyclops almost makes a joke about the similarity of the robot's name to Colossus.
  • Wolverine says that Warhawk's fighting style is a lot like Iron Fist's, who he met in Iron Fist #15.

Comments

In FOOM#18, Claremont stated that he'd do a story with the X-Men vs. Hurricane(from Captain Britain) if the fill-in wasn't used. Future potential stories he mentioned involved Dr. Synne(also from Captain Britain) and a Deathbird origin by Dave Cockrum.

Shaw likely had help communicating with Warhawk via Emma Frost, as he isn't a telepath.

It was good to see Warhawk again after his appearance in MARVEL PREMIERE #23 (and in shadows in BLACK GOLIATH #2-3). I'm hoping David Walker thinks of using him in the new POWER MAN & IRON FIST series, as he became their foe when he went against them in two issues of Duffy's run on the original book.

This should have been reprinted in Classic X-Men even if it was a fill-in. It was written by Claremont, and the fact that Warhawk bugged Cerebro for Sebastian Shaw is actually a crucial plot point down the line.
