Uncanny X-Men annual #8

Issue(s): Uncanny X-Men annual #8
Published Date: 1984
Title: "The adventures of Lockheed the space dragon and his pet girl Kitty"
Credits:
Chris Claremont - Writer
Stephen Leialoha - Penciler
Stephen Leialoha - Inker
Ann Nocenti - Editor

Review/plot:
Mary Jo Duffy gets a credit for "original idea".

It's storytelling time again.

I honestly kinda just skimmed the issue.

Illyana's story was designed to get her brother and her best friend talking again.

Leialoha's art is more stylized than usual. Very angular in the story sequences and a bit of a Sienkiewicz vibe in the "real" portions. I like it.

Possible suggestion of an inter-species attraction between Kitty and Lockheed!

I kind of want my comics to "count" so i'm not big on these story issues. As a one-time think, Kitty's fairy tale in Uncanny X-Men #153 was cool, but there was no need for a repeat performance.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Storm is still with the X-Men. Since Wolverine is with the team but Xavier is uninjured, this probably takes place during Uncanny X-Men #192 before that "some months later" gap at the end.

References:

  • Kitty thinks that Wolverine's story is a message to her about her recent struggles in the Kitty Pryde and Wolverine mini-series.
  • Illyana says that her story is "in keeping with a recent caper of my own", with a footnote to New Mutants #21.

Comments

Trina Robbins(cited in the footnote) had been a major player in undergound/independent comics for almost 20 years by that point, though I don't think she'd actually written or drawn anything in the mainstream Marvel universe yet.
