August 21st & 28th, 2002

Ok, i'm back from vacation and i've got a big stack of books to review, so we're gonna do it quick and and we're gonna do it snarky.

Agent X 2
Gail Simone / Udon

It's good!

Alias 13
Brian Michael Bendis / Michael Gaydos

It's good! But the sequence on the last page confused me.

Amazing Spider-Man 44
J. Michael Stracynski / John Romita jr

Other than the tired convention of "Peter can't ever take a break from being Spider-man, even when he's not in Manhattan" (i mean, really, he just happens to go all the way across the country and ends up involved with one of his oldest foes?), this was pretty good. It's all about the characterization.

Avengers 57
Geoff Johns / Kieron Dwyer

Some good moments and shows potential for the new writer (who's got a bad track record in my mind with Morlocks and Thing: Freakshow), but the dialogue felt stilted in places, the conflict between Ant-Man and Jack of Hearts (two losers who should really have just been tossed anyway) felt forced, and the world-threatening catastrophe is tripping alarms this close to the god-awful Kang War. The art is crisper and cleaner than it was during Kang War, which proves to me that Dwyer was deliberately drawing things dark and with haggard faces as the Kang War wore on, and wasn't a sign of sloppiness on his part, as some thought.

Daredevil 36
Brian Michael Bendis / Alex Maley

One day i'll cut the 10 or so significant panels out of each of the past 10 issues of this book and make one decently paced issue. But still, it's good.

Elektra: Glimpse & Echo 2
Scott Morse

Ninjas... boring. Interest... waning. The art is cool, but it needs a good story to go along with it.

Fantastic Four 60
Mark Waid / Mike Wieringo

Too reverential, the rap scene is ridiculous, and the art is too cartoony. I know this story wasn't for me due to the promotion, but i can't see new readers caring about this either. Basically, there are two types of people likely to be attracted by the 9 cent offer. 1) Readers new to comics altogether. The problem here is that this is a generic, cheesy plot with kiddie art, and isn't likely to change anyone's perception about comics. 2) Comic readers who generally say "pass" on Marvel comics, or super-hero comics in general. The problem here is that this is a generic, cheesy plot with kiddie art, and isn't likely to change anyone's perception about super-hero comics. Instead of beating us over the head with "They aren't super-heroes", maybe they could have just shown us with a good, non-superhero plot. I'll give Waid more of a chance, of course, 'cause i'm a chump, but this doesn't give me high hopes.

Hood 4
Brian Vaughan / Kyle Hotz

It's good!

Infinity Abyss 6
Jim Starlin

No suprises.

Spider-Man and the Black Cat 2
Kevin Smith / Jerry Dodson

No.

Spider-Man Quality Of Life 4
Greg Rucka / Scott Sava

Seriously, why clutter up the flagship character with a barrage of pointless and low-quality mini-seriesises?

X-Factor 4
Jeff Jensen / Arthur Ranson

Plotwise, things get wrapped up neatly and, in the end, without the help of the protagonists (which is sort of the defintion of the Deus Ex Machina endings that have been passe since, well, the days of Ancient Greece), but still good. Characterization-wise, this ended really well. This is the first believable religious character i think i've ever read about. I'd like to read a continuing series about these characters, by this writer.

X-Statix 2
Peter Milligan / Michael Allred

It's good!
