« Random Lyrics Thursday | Main | Senioritis » SuperMegaSpeed ReviewsBack from Florida only to find a nice pile of comics waiting for me. Logan #2 - Wolverine should not be powerful enough to survive a nuclear bomb blast. That's just ridiculous. Otherwise, this series is well written, but pointless. Ms. Marvel #25 - It's nice to see Ron Frenz and Sal Buscema getting work, but these flashbacks in the style of the time period are getting a little old, and the time period in question is totally wrong for these two. Captain Marvel's late 60s and early 70s books were drawn by Gene Colan and then people imitating the Gene Colan style. These flashback panels should therefore be atmospheric and impressionistic, not simple square panels with clean art. And Captain Marvel's hair at this time was grey, not blond. Other than that nitpicky stuff, i liked this a lot, but it's clear that once again the "tie ins" for the Secret Invasion crossover are being written without any coordination with the main series. Not that i saw anything specifically wrong; it's just that i don't see how or where this story fits with the main series. Clandestine #3 - This continues to be a cute story with nice art. It seems like there's a lot to resolve in the two remaining issues and that the Excalibur cross-time stuff is wasting valuable time, but it's still fun. She-Hulk #27 - Better than the previous arc was but i still don't need this. Damage Control #3 - Like Excalibur, this was fun. It's nice to have some fun comics to balance out... Daredevil #106 - ...which should come with a free razor blade. Isn't having a scene where you go through all the previous times that Matt Murdock has been broken down and miserable just pointing out that your current plotline is just a rehash? Still, let's trust Brubaker to use that deliberately as a way to go in a new direction - maybe he'll break him out of that rut. Punisher War Journal #18 - I couldn't tell who i was looking at half the time in Chaykin's art. There's at least three menacing guys with black hair in this story - and it turned out none of them were the Punisher. I'm also afraid that this Jigsaw plot is going to be another six-parter. Technically i guess fighting Jigsaw falls within the theme of this PWJ series (Punisher goes after super-villains), but only technically. Oh, and i totally did not appreciate the Guitar Hero III product placement. Mighty Avengers #11 - This was awesome. Interesting to see things from Doom's perspective - the thought balloons in this comic have generally just been used to show a snide thought or two from one of the team members but here they were used to actually show us what was going on in Doom's head and i thought that was cool. Obviously this isn't over since it looks like Doom throws his consciousness back in time before getting captured. New Avengers #39 - Also nice. The art was a little sparse with some "artistic" panel placement that required David Mack to draw a lot less, but it was nice to see him actually drawing in a traditional style. I also - people are going to think i hate Wolverine - liked seeing Wolverine so badly injured by a Cyclops eyeblast. Secret Invasion #1 - If Bendis can keep the momentum going like this, it's going to be fantastic. I'm very interested in the text piece at the end that claims there have been all sorts of clues placed throughout various books (mainly written by Bendis). Not sure what to make of the ending, though - Mockingbird didn't exist as a character at the same time that Ms. Marvel wore her original outfit, and the White Queen would never have been hanging out with all those good guys at any point in the late 70s/early 80s period that it seems to imply these characters are coming back from. We'll see where that goes before registering a complaint, though. Thunderbolts #116-119 - Great stuff; i'm glad i decided to pick these up. Ellis has a great handle on these characters; not something i would expect from someone who 'hates superheroes'. By fnord12 | April 11, 2008, 7:33 AM | Comics Commentslogan, like origin, is awful, though slightly less awful than origin. i liked damage control. ofc there's no more of it. i refuse to read daredevil. doom would never carry on like he did in MA about ms. marvel being a fat cow and such. it seems way out of character. leinil yu's art still sucked although it sucked slightly less due to someone else inking. that shot of iron fist on the quinjet in the savage land - awful. since david mack clearly steals other people's art, i don't understand what takes him so long to draw a damn comic. |
