Sounds familiar Every face looks pretty much like every other face. It's called face blindness, or prosopagnosia. "I can see your expressions and your attention and where your eyes look. I see all the features but it doesn't quite add up to a unique image." Someone who is face blind sees the features, but can't place the face. "Sometimes I kiss or embrace strangers thinking that I know them," Sacks said. Gosh, wouldn't that be embarrassing if i kissed the wrong Michael Keaton? Is that really why Lex Luthor is a bad guy? He blames Superman for making him bald? Is that really enough to make a man genetically engineer solar-powered hornets? By fnord12 | December 10, 2010, 10:09 AM | Comics | Comments (1) | Link
Solar-powered Hornets According to this article, wasps are usually more active in the morning. Not the Oriental hornets, though. They're more active in the middle of the day. Within this cuticle is a pigment that actually captures the energy of the sun's rays. "Xanthopterin works as a light harvesting molecule transforming light into electrical energy." The hornets' ability to convert sunlight in this way could explain why they become more active during the middle of the day, when the light intensity is highest. So, the question is why did these particular hornets evolve to have this trait? The article mentions how this might aid them in their "energy demanding digging activity" for their underground nests. They can't be the only type of wasp that digs underground. Do they have to come up every couple of minutes to replenish their lost reserves? Where can i get some solar harvesting cuticles? Did Lex Luthor genetically engineer them? I need answers. By min | December 9, 2010, 11:01 AM | Science| Link Teddy Bear-Shaped Deli Meats This is brilliant. Did advertising ever work? Because you can measure clicks, it's easy to see how well online advertising works. And of course, online advertising doesn't work very well. The conclusion advertisers seem to be drawing is that online advertising isn't very effective. But traditional ('offline'?) advertising isn't known to work better; it just isn't measurable. The logical conclusion to all of this results in the destruction of print media and television as we know it, of course. So i guess we shouldn't really think about it. By fnord12 | December 6, 2010, 11:24 AM | Liberal Outrage | Comments (2) | Link What's the plan? I think the Republicans winning back the House makes the Democrats think that they can just wash their hands of this whole 'governing' thing and just kinda sit back and hope for the best. Actually, even before the Republicans won back the house, it was "We don't have 60 votes in the Senate." Do these guys want to be in charge?
