Recap 11 - August 4th, 2007

Of Course It Had To Be Spiders

Lashtal,

I hope this letter finds you and the rest of our friends well.

In my last letter, I told you how we defeated the kopru inside a giant cavern. That night as we rested after climbing out of the cavern, more armored kopru and an unarmored squid creature appeared at the foot of the hill. As we prepared to defend ourselves, Brecaryn's owl noticed the mysterious dark elf who had kidnapped Flerm and Alana last time standing in the distance, watching and waiting.

The squid creature seemed to possess powerful mental abilities. With Brecaryn's magick, we were just barely able to handle its attacks. As we fought, out of nowhere, a bear charged out and attacked the nearest kopru. It was Ursa! Another kopru erupted in thorns as Leento strode forward. With Leento and Ursa by our side, we quickly dispatched the last of the enemies. By this time, the dark elf had disappeared.

Instead of rejoicing at our reunion, we received a set down from Leento. In our efforts to weaken and destroy the kopru, we had also destroyed the machinery keeping the island in its unnatural tropical state. The creatures who could not adapt the the inevitable change in climate would perish. I think you must suspect that Malouf did not take kindly to Leento's words and attitude. You are correct. There was much bitter muttering after our "lecture". Leento decided to stay behind and use his druidic powers to try and seek a balance. His last act before we left him was to help us hide and protect the mirror in a cave.

On our journey back to the wall, we were attacked by raptors and strange creatures apparently made of wood, with large, square heads. From the tikimen encounter, we obtained some sort of religious artifact. Brecaryn has kept it for further study.

As always with us, this went from bad to worse. We discovered a pile of slain warriors from the tribe that manned the wall. One body had 2 small puncture wounds on his neck. This did not bode well for our chances of getting back through the wall easily.

We arrived at the wall to see a sacrifice in progress. Katherine was tied up and drums were playing to summon Unga. The village witch doctor Poru had taken over the village since we'd gone through the wall. There was no way we could get through without defeating Poru. And probably Unga, as well. However, doing so proved much more difficult that it sounded.

Poru had used powerful magicks to ally himself with some spiders. It made him immortal. Each time he was wounded, spiders would weave his body back together with their webbing. Even a blow from Lieralyn that nearly severed his body in half did not stop him. The only way to kill him was to find his soul and release it to make his body mortal again, and therefore kill-able. While most of the group stayed behind to keep Poru and Unga busy, Flerm and I snuck over the wall using invisibility potions and tried to find this hidden soul.

I found it - in a mausoleum guarded by zombies and a wight. Another wight. *sigh* This time, knowing what my foe was, I called for assitance. With the help of Flerm and Malouf, I was able get through the entrance and into the mausoleum. Inside, I saw Poru and a giant spider guarding a vessel. Malouf came down to help but I called up to Flerm to go back to the rest of the party, knowing he would be no help in this situation.

The rest of the party was not faring well. Though they had managed to slay the giant ape Unga, Josy, Alana, Brecaryn, and Lieralyn were barely holding back the seemingly endless hordes of warriors. Flerm made his way to them at a painfully slow rate, and it seemed like he might be too late.

Meanwhile, I was able to leap behind the spider and smash the vessel containing Poru's soul. Mortal again, he screamed in pain from his wounds. Taking this opportunity, Malouf finished the wizard off while I destroyed the spider. It has been my misfortune to find out first hand how difficult it is to clean spider innards from your clothing.

We then rushed back to aid our teammates, overtaking Flerm in the process. With our help, the rest of the barbarian warriors were easily dispatched.

The remaining tribe members who had been taken prisoner were freed. In gratitude, the tribe re-equipped us. Alana was presented with a suit of leather armor. Arrows, spears, a hand axe, and a shield were also provided. And as a special thanks, the chief presented Malouf with a baby griffin. As Malouf held the griffin, a strange expression crossed his face. He thought he could hear the griffin speaking to him. After the trouble we had with that magick sword, I was more than a little concerned by this statement. The chief explained that this meant the griffin had successfully bonded to Malouf and was normal. The creature is certainly cute. And Malouf seems to have grown quite fond of it. I hope that it will soon be able to protect itself. We often find ourselves in untenable situations and I would not like to see such a young creature harmed.

We decided to stay in the village and rest before continuing our journey. From the chief we learned that our ship had been stolen by pirates. In order to get back to Chumera, we would have to find these pirates and retake our ship. Nothing is ever easy, but trials should always be seen as ways to improve ourselves.

May the light watch over you.
