Alpha Flight #47

Issue(s): Alpha Flight #47
Cover Date: Jun 87
Title: "You can't tell the forest from the trees!"
Credits:
Bill Mantlo - Writer
E. Craig Brasfield, Mike Mignola, & Steve Purcell - Penciler
Whilce Portacio & Terry Austin - Inker
Carl Potts - Editor

Review/plot:
This is a fill-in or possibly inventory issue, maybe something left over from Mignola's run that didn't get finished until now (and by additional artists). It's a Vindicator solo story. She goes home and helps fight off an alien tree invasion.

It turns out that Heather's family basically had disowned her, seen here in some flashbacks involving Wolverine...

...but they've now called her home to deal with the tree problem.

The tree creatures turn out to have encased the humans they've possessed, so while Heather starts off using lethal force against them, she later refines her attack to just burn off the tree creatures.

No word on whether or not these things are related to Groot.

Just a typical horror story that would have fit into an old issue of Strange Tales if not for the woman in the power suit.

Quality Rating: C

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Heather thinks to herself that Alpha Flight was in the middle of trying to get psychiatric help for the "deranged Roger Bochs" when she got the call from Gary Cody about this.

References:

  • From the flashback, Wolverine left Department H to join the X-Men in Giant-Sized X-Men #1 and Guardian died in Alpha Flight #12.
  • In Alpha Flight #33-34, Lady Deathstrike hinted that Guardian was behind Logan's unwilling transformation into Wolverine.

Comments

Weirdly enough, Amazing Heroes Preview Special #5(published at about this time) claimed that Mantlo had "already left" this title. Probably an untold story there...
