Review/plot:
This is a relatively lighthearted issue...

...where a kid named Ollie Osnick attempts to become Spider-Man's sidekick. Ollie had appeared previously as Doctor Octopus in a super-villain fan club, and he's got a working set of Dock Ock arms.

Spider-Man is able to successfully discourage him...

...but he also helps him out in front of the kids at school.

Also in this issue, Peter Parker leaves his costume soaking too long, and he's forced to use the black costume that the Black Cat gave him recently.

And little Normie Osborn is born.

Cute issue.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 3 - first Normie Osborn

Chronological Placement Considerations: This takes place soon after Spider-Man and the Black Cat's aborted raid on the Kingpin's building in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #99. Spidey and the Cat are shown swinging home from that raid.

References:

  • Ollie Osnick previously ran a super-villain fan club in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #72 and built himself the Doc Ock arms.
  • The Black Cat gave Spider-Man a cloth version of the black costume in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #99.
  • Spidey got the original black costume during Secret Wars.
  • This doesn't really qualify for a reference, but at one point Spider-Man tells Ollie "If you want to be a kid side-kick, try Power Pack." Spider-Man met Power Pack in Power Pack #6.

Crossover: N/A

Continuity Insert? N

Comments

The Marvel UK reprint of this was the most wildly altered and edited reprint they ever did. For reasons I can only explain as insanity they put it out immediately after the introduction of the alien costume, so they inserted an explanation of what happened to that and also removed all reference to Liz having a baby while still using most of the art! Apparently Liz is ill here though how is not specified. There were other seemingly random changes to dialogue too. A year later they changed their minds and ran the end of the black costume storyline and the Hobgoblin story where Liz is pregnant. It ended with Liz being rushed to hospital and everyone worried that she and the baby might not make it... and she was never seen again until the comic was cancelled!
