Amazing Spider-Man annual #4Issue(s): Amazing Spider-Man annual #4 Review/plot: ![]() All that said, this is basically a fun issue. I actually like Lieber's art style. Simple layouts, very large characters in uncomplicated poses. ![]() ![]() I guess it's the sort of thing you'd see in a coloring book rather than a Marvel comic book from this period, but it's a nice change of pace. This is Larry "House Style" Lieber, not Larry "Histrionic Watcher" Lieber. ![]() ![]() The villains of this piece are Mysterio and the Wizard... ![]() ...which is a decent pairing (the Wizard takes the lead and Mysterio's illusion powers take a back-seat; he's mainly utilized for his knowledge of movie sets). The have a little power struggle in flashback (i love how Mysterio just straight up admits to being motivated by an irrational hatred of Spider-Man)... ![]() ...and while they resolve it, they start bickering when their scheme turns south. To be fair, Spider-man and the Human Torch do plenty of bickering too. And fighting. ![]() It turns out that one of the components of Spider-Man's webbing is asbestos, because he's prepared to fight the Torch with it during their first chance encounter. ![]() I'm going to have to relent on my stance that no one knows about Spider-Man's spider-sense. Clearly the Human Torch knows about it (Spidey has spilled the beans to the Torch in the past) and Mysterio knew about it (in his first appearance, he disabled it), but in this issue, Mysterio mentions it to the Wizard, so i assume at this point it's been blabbed to everyone. ![]() Too bad. I prefer "How did he know to dodge that?" to "Blast your cursed spider-sense!". Look internet! Someone in a comic said "Pull a boner!". Ha ha! I can haz major traffic now? ![]() Quality Rating: C Chronological Placement Considerations: The MCP places this between Amazing Spider-Man #52-53 and during Fantastic Four #68. Regarding the Torch, i assume the MCP's placement is due to the fact that Alicia is injured in #67 and still in the hospital in issue #68, but i don't see that as being a reason why the Torch couldn't appear here between #67-68 instead of during #68. Jonah Jameson, Mysterio, Spider-Man, Wizard 1967 / Box 4 / Silver Age CommentsMy copy of this actually has a page missing. So that when they get caught in the gas cage, they're like "this is the end, there's no escape!" then it immediately skips to "yes! With clever use of our power combination, we've now escaped!" It's kind of funny, to this day I have no idea how they got out. Posted by: Max_Spider | September 8, 2013 10:36 AM I also place this one in a gap in FF#68. I got a kick out of the two special effects villains teaming up. Posted by: Bobby Sisemore | November 12, 2016 10:20 PM You actually have this between #56 and #57, when Spidey has amnesia. Posted by: Morgan Wick | January 13, 2017 1:38 PM Thanks Morgan. Pushed it back before #53. Posted by: fnord12 | January 16, 2017 2:51 PM I suppose the idea to team up the Wizard and Mysterio came from the fact that they both got their start doing the "impersonate the hero to frame him" bit.
