Avengers #11

Issue(s): Avengers #11, Avengers Classic #11
Cover Date: Dec 64
Title: "The mighty Avengers meet Spider-Man!"
Credits:
Stan Lee - Writer
Don Heck - Penciler
Chic Stone - Inker

Review/plot:
Iron Man is missing.

Poor Rick tries to second a motion made by Giant-Man at an Avengers meeting granting Iron Man a leave of absence, only to get smacked down by Cap since Rick is not a member of the team (because Cap won't let him be, even though he brings him along on all the missions and makes him sit through the meetings).

Kang creates a duplicate of Spider-man to attack the rest of the Avengers.

The Spidey-clone tricks the Avengers into following him (note the proto Avengers Assemble cry in the second image below)...

...leading them to a booby trapped pyramid in Mexico. He defeats the Avengers one by one.

Here's a nice use of Giant-Man's powers. Unfortunately, using his powers like this is what destroys his body (and mind?) later on.

Then the real Spidey shows up and beats the clone in a crazy Spidey Wing Glide battle.

Interesting story because the Avengers never actually meet Spider-Man or Kang this issue.

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 3

Chronological Placement Considerations: Takes place in the time period between Tales Of Suspense #61, when Iron Man goes missing after the 'death' of Tony Stark, and his return to America in Tales Of Suspense #63. Some nice inter-book continuity here.

I've been covering the Avengers Classic back-ups in the corresponding Avengers issues, but the back-up for this issue can't take place circa the main story, so i've given it its own entry.

References:

  • At the beginning of this issue, Iron Man has been missing since Tales Of Suspense #61. He is presumed to be tracking down the murderer of Tony Stark.
  • Baron Zemo had Wonder Man fight the Avengers in Avengers #9, but Wondy switched sides and fought against the Masters of Evil. Kang is using a robot this issue because he doesn't want to make the same mistake as Zemo.
  • In the back-up, Spider-Man makes a couple of references to Amazing Fantasy #15.

Crossover: N/A

Continuity Insert? N

My Reprint: Avengers annual #5

Inbound References (2): show

  • Avengers #129-135, Giant-Size Avengers #2-4
  • Iron Man #33-35

The Spider-Man robot from this story makes a very odd return appearance decades later in Spider-Man Team-Up #4.

Heck's Spider-Man looks like the 60s animated one in all the memes.
