Review/plot:
This Thor story is written by Alan Zelenetz, who will become Thor's regular writer a little after this, and it's illustrated by John Bolton, who is known to Marvel fans mainly for drawing the back-ups in Classic X-Men.

The story begins with festivities in Asgard's banquet hall, but Thor is absent because he is visiting the Norns on Odin's orders.

In their Twilight Well, the Norns show Thor a scene from his past. The point is to give Thor yet another lesson in humility. The story takes place in the days of vikings. A viking, Runolf, is lost at sea and says a prayer to Thor, asking him to preserve him so that he can avenge his chieftain's death. Everyone - Odin, the Norns, Heimdall - tell Thor that Runolf's death was ordained long ago and Thor should not attempt to intervene. But Thor does so anyway. He stops the storm that was threatening Runolf, but then has to contend with a giant seahorse (!).

Thor kills the horse with lightning, but finds that Runolf is dead anyway.

In the present, Thor says that he's humbled, although he still says that he'll yield to no one except the Norns, and i have to imagine in his head he's bristling at having to partake in another "lesson". The guy was bonded to Donald Blake already; how much humility does one person need?

Still, if you ever wanted to see John Bolton draw Thor hitting a giant horse in the head with a hammer, this book is for you. I was wondering what might qualify a Thor adventure as "Bizarre", but that certainly counts.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Most of the story is a flashback taking place long ago, but the MCP have the main portion between Thor #318-319.

Comments

This is set to be reprinted in the upcoming Thor Epic Collection tbp "Runequest," which features the tail end of the Moench run and all the Zelenetz issues before Simonson takes over. I've pre-ordered it, I can't wait. It looks like the Epic will have this story just before Thor 320, probably for space purposes.
