Captain America #109

Issue(s): Captain America #109
Cover Date: Jan 69
Title: "The hero that was!"
Credits:
Stan Lee - Writer
Jack Kirby - Penciler
Syd Shores - Inker

Review/plot:
This is pretty much the end of Jack Kirby's first run on Captain America (he will also do #112), and it is nicely book-ended with a retelling of Cap's origin, as told by Cap to Nick Fury.

Not much to comment on from a story perspective except that Fury tells Cap to stop whining so much, and in this telling the scientist who created the super-serum is named Reinstein (and drawn to look just like Einstein) and not Erskine.

The origin elements. Steve Rogers volunteers, is rejected but picked up by a special program.

Old lady mask:

Vita-rays this time. No oral or injected component shown.

Reinstein is killed.

And the Bucky origin is the same as in Tales of Suspense #63.

Standard Kirby (which means it is very nice), but there's not much of a story here for those of us already familiar with the origin.

There's also a really cool cover, with Cap bursting out of a newspaper.

Quality Rating: C

Historical Significance Rating: 2

Chronological Placement Considerations: Moved back a bit to accommodate the Hulk's appearance in Captain America #110.

Props to Syd Shores for his stellar job on the inks. Regarding the cover: "The background is the New York Times front page from December 8, 1941. (Source identified by Darci via the GCD Error Tracker.)" link
