Captain America #215

Issue(s): Captain America #215
Cover Date: Nov 77
Title: "The way it really was!"
Credits:
Roy Thomas - Writer
George Tuska - Penciler
Pablo Marcos - Inker

Review/plot:
Jack Kirby has left and Roy Thomas is supposedly taking over the Captain America book (although it won't really pan out that way), and we begin here with what was either a treading water exercise or a justification for some major and ill advised retcons to Cap's origin. This story has Cap, recently having recovered from being blind, going to the top of the Empire State Building with the Falcon to take in the sights.

Beyond that, the issue is just a review of Cap's history, incorporating all the various revisions and continuity inserts to date.

Seems harmless enough, but there's a few points that raise eyebrows. I'll cover them in the next arc. But the gist of the problem is here.

That should read "Puzzled frowns cross the faces of the startled readers."

There's also a mention of Cap's shield, "whose amazing secret I shall carry to my grave".

Quality Rating: D

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Captain America has just recently recovered from being blind, so i've placed this directly after the entry with #214. See that entry for a little caveat, though. Next issue is a reprint.

References:

  • Obviously lots of references. We start with Cap's origin, and there's no footnote so you can have either Captain America Comics #1 or Tales of Suspense #63.
  • Avengers #4 covers Cap's suspended animation, Bucky's death, and Cap's revival by Namor and the Avengers.
  • After Cap was thought dead, he was replaced by the Spirit of '76 and then the Patriot in What If? #4.
  • Then the Patriot was replaced by the 1950s Cap, as shown in Captain America #155.
  • Rick Jones briefly acted as a Bucky circa Captain America #110.
  • The Falcon was introduced in Captain America #117-119 (the Snap Wilson revisions to the Falcon's origin are not mentioned).
  • Steve Rogers gave up being Captain America for a time in Captain America #176.

Comments

Tuska didn't put any zoo animals in the city montage this time.
