Captain America #216

Issue(s): Captain America #216
Cover Date: Dec 77
Title: "Captain America"
Credits:
Roy Thomas - Writer
David Cockrum - Penciler
Frank Giacoia - Inker

Review/plot:
This was a reprint issue, re-presenting the appearance of the fake Captain America from Strange Tales #114. On a meta level, that story was a try-out/teaser prior to bringing back the real Captain America in Avengers #4. In-universe, it doesn't really have a lot to do with Captain America specifically. But this story does contain an opening splash set in the present day, with Captain America still reeling from revelations about his past from recent issues of this series. The narration then says that this is one incarnation of Cap that he perhaps never knew about, and then it goes into the reprint.

At least we get a decent splash from an uncredited Cockrum and Giacoia.

It's also worth noting the page count. The original 18 page story is included without any alteration (as far as i can tell). And we have the opening splash page. But when the story was originally printed in Strange Tales, a 5 page Doctor Strange story was included with it. So we are down 4 pages from 1963 comics. The page count will go back up to ~22 in 1980.

A final note: the Quality Rating for entries like this is more or less meaningless. It's a perfectly fine splash page, but really what you're going to get out of this issue is based on whether or not you already have the original story.

Quality Rating: D+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: For the single present day page, Captain America is just wandering the street in costume, thinking about his origin. It doesn't have to take place directly after last issue or directly before next, and other Cap appearances can take place in between.

Comments

Jim Shooter used to hand out copies of this issue to Marvel creators to illustrate how to tell a story. He used the Kirby story however not the splash page.
