Issue(s): Captain America #246
Cover Date: Jun 80
Title: "The sins of the fathers!"
Credits:
Peter Gillis - Writer
Jerry Bingham - Penciler
Alan Gordon - Inker

Review/plot:
Captain America gets into a conflict with the "guy named Joe" from an early Amazing Spider-Man issue. Cap is alerted to the issue through his neighbor Josh Cooper.

Joe's still having a string of bad luck. His acting career as the Crimson Bat has fallen apart....

...his wife left him, and his kid had a birth defect that eventually kills him. Joe goes after those that he felt were responsible.

Cap is able to get through to him before he kills his final victim.

A little heavy but still decent writing from Gillis in this fill-in as we wait for the Stern/Byrne team to start.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: The MCP has this issue placed earlier than its publishing date to clear the way for Cap's appearance in the Avengers.

Comments

Pretty neat that Gillis dusted off a character that really could have just disappeared, wasn't a big fan of him and gave him some depth. A drag Joe got more raw deals in the end.

Apparently he turns up a couple of times more, including a ret-conned appearance between his first appearance and this one.
