Cloak and Dagger #4Issue(s): Cloak and Dagger #4 Review/plot: ![]() And unlike N'astirh, he's not going to get over-reliant on technology (never mind that it was him who brought Whiz Kid to N'astirh to build a super-computer in the first place). He's got a spell that just requires the sacrifice of two mutants, preferably by their own hands. And who doesn't think "Cloak and Dagger" when they think "mutant"? ![]() This, ladies and gentlemen, is Inferno done right! ![]() Now, we know that Cloak and Dagger aren't currently together at the moment. Cloak, in particular, is floating off in deep space. But while Crotus sends some demons to him... ![]() ...this isn't a convenient way to bring him back to Earth. The demons are just going to taunt him out there with visions of Dagger, his family, and Rebecca 'Rusty' Nales, the cop he bonded with a few issues back. Similar thing with Dagger; she's visited by Crotus posing as Cloak. ![]() Cloak is stuck in his little bubble, and unable to fight back. And he's also despairing. Dagger is also despairing due to her blindness, but she is able to pull herself together and fight back. ![]() Since she's filled with an excess amount of light, she's able to "go nova" and blast Crotus into non-existence. Cloak, meanwhile, tricks the demons into teleporting into the bubble, where he absorbs them. He then seemingly dies. ![]() ![]() After it's over, some of the New Mutants are seen patrolling the city looking for lingering demons (Warlock is very serious! Grr! Grr! Grr!)... ![]() ...and they follow the demon trail to Dagger's apartment. ![]() She tells them that the demon is taken care of, but she's worried about Cloak. So she gets into costume and uses her light knives to trace Cloak... ![]() ...with Warlock providing the transportation. And the trail leads them to space... ![]() ...but unfortunately at this point all that is left is Cloak's cloak. ![]() Despite the tragic elements - Cloak being susceptible to being goaded into suicide, Cloak seemingly dying, and Dagger's blindness - these issues are pretty fun and it's an especially nice and lighthearted guest appearance by the New Mutants. In the lettercol, Terry Austin tries to take advantage of the anticipated influx of readers due to the Inferno crossover by providing a summary of his entire run, beginning with Strange Tales #8. Considering the sort of clean slate on the X-Books thanks to Inferno, i wouldn't have minded if there were a creative team shift moving Austin to New Mutants at this time. He has fun with Warlock here, and that book might have benefited from the more whimsical tone that we're seeing here. Austin does mention in the lettercol that he'll be writing the upcoming X-Men annual. Quality Rating: B- Chronological Placement Considerations: The Nabisco tag on this issue says "Inferno finale", but Power Pack #44 (which just says "Inferno continues") references this issue, so it must take place later. And then there's Damage Control #4 (the corner says "Inferno continues interminably"). So it's not really the "finale" yet. References:

Posted by: Jay Demetrick | August 30, 2014 8:44 PM Jay, please, don't direct fnord's attention to X-Factor Annual 4- he'll go mad trying to figure out whether the lead story takes place before or after Acts of Vengeance. Have you no soul? Posted by: Michael | August 30, 2014 9:00 PM I'll have to get there eventually. ;-) But i'll wait until i cover the annual to place the back-up. Posted by: fnord12 | August 30, 2014 9:06 PM Lol! Yea, Michael, the Atlantis Attacks Annuals all had back-up stories that didn't take place alongside the main one if I remember correctly. And the New Nutants one throws a monkey wrench in easy placement if the Atlantis crossover parts that take place after it. Sh! Don't tell fnord12 that though! Posted by: Jay Demetrick | August 30, 2014 9:31 PM I'm getting some real Mark Bagley vibes from the art here. Posted by: MegaSpiderMan | August 31, 2014 9:56 AM Comments are now closed. |
