Daredevil #238

Issue(s): Daredevil #238
Cover Date: Jan 87
Title: "It comes with the claws"
Credits:
Ann Nocenti - Writer
Sal Buscema - Penciler
Stephen Leialoha - Inker
Ralph Macchio - Editor

Review/plot:
Ann Nocenti becomes the regular writer with this issue, which is the only part of the Mutant Massacre to actually say so on the cover, although ironically this was the only issue not included in the trade paperback. In honor of Nocenti's full time debut (she wrote #236 as a fill-in), you may notice a different style in the review.

Sabretooth... everywhere else a violent killer but still a man - A MAN - now a real tiger, taking a mate, defending his turf. Weird, weird. Even Daredevil senses a half-tiger heartbeat.

Metaphor is demonstrated with dogs.

Dogs? But tigers are cats. Ok, cats too.

The metaphor is itself a metaphor.

"What do you do with your kills?"

Daredevil... Olympic athletes do not compare.

Word travels fast when the dead are washed away in the fires of heaven. Street urchins move in.

Sabretooth is a killer and a tiger man, and also takes direction from children.

You're good. I'm better. So what?

Mugger victim says DD only attracts trouble, then Sabretooth shows up to attack just because Daredevil exists, old couple gets hurt.

DD's radar sight no advantage in Morlock tunnels when fighting a tiger-dog-man. Sabretooth knows the blindness of his prey.

Violence.

What do you do with your kills? It makes me... act like no version of myself you've ever seen before!

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Hopefully this takes place after Thor clears the Morlock tunnels in Thor #374, or else all these kids are going to wind up fried (the absence of dead bodies seems to confirm it). Per the lettercol in X-Men #212, this takes place between the Wolverine/Sabretooth fights in X-Men #212-213.

References:

  • The mugger victim blames Daredevil for bringing Nuke to the neighborhood in Daredevil #233.
  • The weird father and some of the Bratpack kids from the Longshot miniseries appear in this issue (no footnote).

Crossover: Mutant Massacre

Continuity Insert? N

My Reprint: N/A

Yeah, that was pretty funny.

I'm going to start using "I have slept. AND NOW I HUNGER!" at every possible opportunity.

Well, at least they were trying to do something original after Miller run(s).

You can't follow that with some run of the mill writer.

Nocenti Daredevil is an interesting experiment.

Not very readable though.
