Review/plot:
Last issue, Mys-Tech ordered the assassination of Shevaun Haldane, aka Dark Angel, and their DOG units were sent out to kill her. Mys-Tech then tried to rescind the assassination, deciding that Shevaun's research could still be of some use to them, but it was apparently too late to call back the DOGs. So the issue ended with Dark Angel and the X-Men fighting the dogs. But we are also in the middle of Mys-Tech Wars at this point, and the first core issue of that crossover showed Dark Angel and the X-Men talking about Mys-Tech and then getting attacked by a demon sent by them. So the majority of this issue shows how Dark Angel and the X-Men deal with the DOGs, and then we go right to the attack from the demon.

The X-Men fight the DOGs for a bit...

...but ultimately trick them into thinking that they've succeeded by using a hologram of Dark Angel.

You've never seen the X-Men so happy as when this ploy works.

Mys-Tech at first think they've successfully rescinded the assassination order and are upset when they realize they've been fooled.

But they've got bigger things to deal with at the moment, namely activating the Un-Earth Project. When that happens, Dark Angel gets some psychic feedback...

...and she has a vision where one of the web-spinners that she saw last issue gives her a prophecy of doom regarding a creature called the Anti-Being.

The Anti-Being will be unleashed when Un-Earth is fully active.

Dark Angel recovers from that as the X-Men are fighting the demon.

This issue takes so much time to wrap up the DOGs plot that it barely feels like a tie-in to Mys-Tech Wars, especially since the Anti-Being concept is not brought up again during the crossover.

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: As noted above, this continues directly from Dark Angel #9 but runs parallel with Mys-Tech Wars #1, so i've allowed space between last issue and this one to catch up the rest of the crossover, and i'm placing this after Mys-Tech Wars #1. The X-Men that actually appear on panel in this issue are more or less the ones that have been appearing in this series all along, but we know from Mys-Tech Wars #1 that more X-Men are present when the demon attacks.

References:

  • The X-Men have a hologram of Dark Angel thanks to the diagnostics they ran on her in Hell's Angel #1.
  • We saw the activation of the Un-Earth Project in Mys-Tech Wars #1.

Seriously, Xavier is doing a fist pump? I don't know if that's ridiculous or awesome.

That scene of X-Men cheering their victory is something straight out of old Transformers comics :)

Now I want to see regular X-Men comics done in that style! :D

Holy cow! Am I the only one seeing the Transformers in that Un-Earth panel? The central one is Fortress Maximus and the other two look to be other headmasters. Why were Transformers included in this scene?

@Bill: wow, I actually missed that! Interesting...

Good eye! Transformers was a key Marvel UK title; in some ways this line owes its existence to the breakout success of Death's Head, introduced by Simon Furman in Transformers Weekly. Marvel still had the publishing license at this point, even if they had erected the wall barring official crossovers.

Looks like a cross between Fortress Maximus and Metroplex to me. Probably closer to Fort Max though, as he was the newer character.

If there's a downside to the original Transformers (note, I said 'if') it's that in comics they could easily become interchangeable robotic humanoids with the vaguest of personalities. Look at how they were introduced in "Transformers" #1 and how similar it was to the character introductions in "Secret Wars" #1. *shudder*

If you'll excuse me, I need to go listen to "The Touch" a few hundred times.

I really liked this series. I still like it. It was good to see Shevaun again in REVOLUTIONARY WAR and in Gillen's IRON MAN run. I'd love to see her as an Avenger, but alas no one would think of using her.
