Issue(s): Dead of Night #11
Cover Date: Aug 75
Title: "Enter: The Scarecrow"
Credits:
Scott Edelman - Writer
Rico Rival - Penciler
Rico Rival - Inker

Review/plot:
This Scarecrow character barely made it into print.

His story was first meant to appear in Monsters Unleashed but that book was cancelled. Then Giant-Size Werewolf By Night but that book was also cancelled. Then here, and this book was cancelled after this issue. The Scarecrow was meant to have been an ongoing series, but after this cancellation it died, although the character does have a few scattered additional appearances. He'll much later be consolidated with other cosmic fear entities as one of the Fear Lords although unlike Dweller In Darkness and Nightmare and the others, he's not a bad guy. And he changes his name from Scarecrow to Straw Man along the way to distinguish himself from Marvel's other Scarecrow character.

This more typical horror/vengeance style story shows him to be bound with a painting. A group of cultists of Kalumai attempt to steal the painting from the estate of a recently deceased man, but the Scarecrow manifests and kills them.

The painting winds up in an auction, where Jess and Dave Duncan, and Jess' girlfriend Harmony, get into a bidding war against a man that turns out to be the leader of the Kalumai cult.

The cultists kidnap Harmony with the intent to sacrifice her, but the Scarecrow again appears...

...summoning crows...

...animating trees and murdering the cult leader.

Comments

Dave and Jess Duncan and Harmony all appear again in Marvel Spotlight 26 and Marvel Two-In-One 18.
Dave Duncan might have been intended to have some connection with the Scarecrow.

The name change may also have been due to DC's increasing use of the Batman villain Scarecrow(who predated this Scarecrow by almost 35 years).

Added Dave and Jess. Not sure what to do about Harmony since she doesn't even have a last name. She could actually be Dave's wife, i suppose.

According to the Marvel Appendix, she's Harmony Maxwell- I'm not sure if the last name is from a story or the Handbooks.

Harmony's last name is given in Marvel Spotlight #26, the Scarecrow's second appearance. An important mystery solved!

Posted by: Denis | April 12, 2016 7:20 AM

Toutes mes excuses, effectivement j'ai commis une erreur, en cause la publication d'origine, il n'a pas été ressorti chez le concurrent de cet éditeur.

Posted by: Denis | April 12, 2016 7:24 AM

Via Babelfish:
Except error, Scott Edelman has \"republier\" the character "
in DC
Or, so only 'had only' a story in French (published by Aredit in black & white, Pocket size) without knowing its appearance in the Marvel, the character looks much...

Posted by: Michael | April 12, 2016 7:57 AM

My apologies, actually j\ 'made a mistake, questioning the publication d\' origin, it only ' has not emerged at the competitor of this editor.

Posted by: Michael | April 12, 2016 7:58 AM

Was the Scarecrow/Straw Man inspired by a case of Scott Edelman having Stendhal Syndrome?
