Defenders #102

Issue(s): Defenders #102
Cover Date: Dec 81
Title: "Mind games!"
Credits:
J.M. DeMatteis - Writer
Don Perlin - Penciler
Jack Abel, Joe Sinnott, & Sal Trapani - Inker

Review/plot:
Nighthawk, now crippled, visits the woman, Mindy Williams, that he himself crippled in a car accident when he was a careless college student.

She turns out to be a powerful telepath who is being manipulated by a Black Ops agency of the US Government.

It turns out Kyle was actually crippled by a psychic wave of resentment from Mindy, totally unrelated to the Six Fingered Hand.

Perlin with Kim DeMulder inks a few years from now will look fantastic, but the art in this issue (which has three inkers so maybe there were deadline problems) isn't so great.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: The Defenders appear in Marvel Team-Up #111-112 before this issue. Dr. Strange's appearance in Micronauts #30-35 take place concurrently with this issue; Strange is not available to perform Nighthawk's regular mystical therapy treatments, so Clea has to do it.

Those Micronauts issues take place before Dr. Strange #47.

The other patients with Mindy Williams in this issue are the telepaths that eventually merge with her and become Chorus, with Ursula Richards being miscolored). Phillip Le Guin may also be present off-panel (but i'm not listing her).

References:

  • Nighthawk became re-acquainted with Mindy Williams in Marvel Team-Up #101.
  • Nighthawk died and was restored by the lifeforce of the other Defenders in Defenders #14.
  • He became paralyzed when the lifeforce bond was shattered in Defenders #93.
  • Dr. Strange hasn't really had time to examine Nighthawk because he was too busy with the Six Fingered Hand saga, which began in Defenders #94 and ended in Defenders #100.
