Defenders #119

Issue(s): Defenders #119
Cover Date: May 83
Title: "Ashes, ashes... We all fall down!"
Credits:
J.M. DeMatteis & Steven Grant - Writer
Sal Buscema - Penciler
Jack Abel - Inker

Review/plot:
The majority of this issue is a flashback to a time between Defenders #68 and #69. Steven Grant is credited as the "scripter" for the flashback. J.M. DeMatteis is credited with an "invaluable assist". It seems likely that DeMatteis wrote the framing sequence and Grant fully wrote (i.e. not just scripted) the flashback.

The current time framing sequence features a mysterious panel receiving information from Nighthawk's nurse Luann Bloom, who it turns out is actually a robot that's been recording the Defenders' actions.

The flashback story shows the Defenders fighting a woman possessed by the spirit of Yandroth. Pretty irrelevant stuff.

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Most of this issue is flashback taking place between Defenders #68 and #69. The framing sequence doesn't involve any characters that require chronological consideration. All Defenders issues from here through issue #125 have been pushed back in publication time due to the appearance of the Vision in issues #123-124, which must take place before the Vision is disabled in Avengers #233.

References:

  • Yandroth inadvertently caused the Defenders to be formed in Marvel Feature #1.
  • The Defenders defeated his Omegatron in Defenders #5.
  • Valkyrie regained her own body in Defenders #68 but the years of sharing a body apparently make her resistant to mind control.

Comments

Steven Grant said in an interview with CBR "I’d written a fill-in [issue of ‘The Defenders’], featuring a female Yandroth (which ended up being published many years later) and Al asked if I’d finish off the Omega storyline so they could get on with their lives". So the flashback was that story and Grant was presumably the full writer.

Yeah, the lead-in to the "flashback" fnord shows, with the robot being squeezed in the top above the splash page with the title, screams "fill-in that's finally getting used".
