Review/plot:
Finally having wrapped his mind around the fact that Eternity changed his name to Stephen Sanders, Dr. Strange finally gets around to looking at the actual contents of the telegram that arrived last issue. The telegram is a summons from an old friend named Kenneth Ward. Ward discovered an ancient artifact. He has since become imprisoned/possessed by the Undying Ones.

Dr. Strange defeats them, but Ward dies.

Even though the letters page says that the change to Dr. Strange's costume are helping sales, this is the last issue of his series.

The Undying Ones story will be continued in Sub-Mariner #22 and Hulk #126 and is considered a prototype for the Defenders.

Comments

This whole story is an H.P. Lovecraft trope. "Ward" comes from "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward".

Marvel Tribune #10(2/69) announced that this title and Nick Fury's were headed for cancellation , but the reason given wasn't poor sales, but instead "the advanced due date of {Marvel's} new printer"
