Doctor Strange #47

Issue(s): Doctor Strange #47
Cover Date: Jun 81
Title: "The grand illusion!"
Credits:
Roger Stern - Writer
Gene Colan - Penciler
Dan Green - Inker

Review/plot:
Dr. Strange and Clea spend some time training, and then respond to a disturbance at an old fashioned university where a prankster demon named Ikonn...

...is causing the students to belatedly enact the protests of the 60s...

...as well as break the laws of physical reality.

Ikonn has been one of the entities that Dr. Strange calls on since his Strange Tales days ("Ikonn's shifting sands", "Images of Ikonn dispell the haze which surrounds thee"), but this is the first time we've actually seen him.

A fun bit with Wong and Sara Wolfe:

Nice Gene Colan art and a decent cute story.

The lettercol says that Frank Miller will still be joining to book as of issue #50, but that won't actually be the case.

Quality Rating: B-

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Pushed forward in publication time to fit after the resolution and epilogue to the Defender's Six Fingered Hand arc. Dr. Strange's appearances in Marvel Team-Up #111-112 and Micronauts #30-35 take place prior to this, and he's here between issues #101 and #104 of the Defenders.

References:

  • In training Clea, Dr. Strange refers to her summoning of the Rings of Raggadorr to defeat two gargoyles in Dr. Strange #44. He says her conjuration was ill-formed and has her practice.

Comments

The title refers to an album by a popular 1970s rock band(Kansas? Styx? I don't remember).

It was Styx. (it's also nearly the name of a 1937 film by French director Jean Renoir that was anti-war...but obviously not the case here)
