Elektra #-1

Issue(s): Elektra #-1
Cover Date: Jul 97
Title: "Love Is Blind"
Credits:
Peter Milligan - Writer
Mike Deodato Jr. - Penciler
Deodato Studios - Inker
Bobbie Chase - Editor
Bob Harras - EIC

Review/plot:
After her father's death, Elektra then goes off to hunt down his killers and nearly fails but she is secretly aided by a member of the Hand. She begins to train using the Sai.

Nice art from Deodato this issue. Nothing exploitative, either.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 3

Chronological Placement Considerations: This story takes place concurrently with events in the Man Without Fear mini-series. It depicts the murder of Elektra's father, and shows Matt trying to help dressed in a costume similar to what he wore at the end of Man Without Fear.

The death of Elektra's father happens between pages in Man Without Fear #3; it's never depicted on panel. So the events of this issue fit there. Throughout this issue Elektra is depicted as an inexperienced but competent fighter, very different than in MWF, but considering her mental imbalance this isn't a huge hurdle.

"She reads every book on every martial art she can find." oh brother.

i always enjoy Deodato art. even when he's being exploitive, at least people look like people, and you can follow the action.

Not a fan of the art. No one could capture the beauty of a female face like Romita and the Buscema brothers. Electra's face on the last panel is awful, which coincides with the rating that I submitted.

I agree about the art and the talents of John Romita and the Buscemas but would add Dick Giordano to that list.
