Review/plot:
Firestar is being trained by the White Queen. In addition to learning to use her powers, she's being conditioned to fear the X-Men.

She's kept apart from the White Queen's Hellions, which results in some resentment.

Emma Frost does decide to hold a school dance, and she invites the New Mutants as well, who Xavier allows to attend despite protest from Wolverine. Angelica and Sam Guthrie (Cannonball) hit it off, at least partially due to Frost's manipulations.

Frost then arranges for Angelica's favorite horse ("Butter Rum") to die in a fire that Angelica thinks she caused, the point of which is that it's she, not Sam, who comforts her, and therefore Angelica will learn to only trust Frost. A bit elaborate a scheme for someone with mind control powers.

I find the writing in this series oddly endearing. Same with Wilshire's art, which is particularly good with close-up faces but somewhat lacking in other ways.

Chronological Placement Considerations: This mini-series spans a sizeable period of time, and X-Men #193 actually takes place between issues #2-3. Wolverine and Storm both appear together here, placing this after Wolverine returns to the team in Uncanny X-Men #192 (before the end scene in that issue where Xavier is injured) but before Storm leaves for Africa.

Comments

I never really thought about it before, but if this story occurs after NM annual #1, then isn't Sam cheating on Lila here by kissing Angelica?

I can buy that sort of thing from Bobby, but sweet, farmboy Sam stepping out on Lila? No way. I declare shenanigans, and No-Prize that Emma was mind-controlling Sam to kiss Angelica to make her associate sex with dead horses n' stuff.
