Ghost Rider #16

Issue(s): Ghost Rider #16
Cover Date: Feb 76
Title: "Blood in the waters"
Credits:
Bill Mantlo - Writer
George Tuska - Penciler
Vincent Colletta - Inker

Review/plot:
A Bill Mantlo fill-in special, this one doesn't do itself justice by billing itself as "in the gripping tradition of Jaws!". Because - and i admit i've never watched a Jaws movie all the way through - i'm fairly certain no Jaws movie ever featured a demonic flaming skull-headed motorcyclist fighting a shark and having to get rescued by dolphins. But this comic book does!

Also, the Man Who Hates Dolphins.

Blaze is in Baja California, trying to take a vacation from his movie studio job. He had to bribe his way past the border guard, who didn't want any naked druggy hippy motorcycle gang guys in his country.

Yet another person who isn't at all phased by Johnny Blaze turning into a demonic flaming skull head ("unless you want me to").

As for next issue, who can say?

Chronological Placement Considerations: This takes place between Champions #3-4. Thanks to my Champions comics being bundled in a trade, i have it in the general vicinity of those issues.

  • Ghost Rider notes that everything in this story is crazy, but no crazier than the fact that he keeps meeting Jesus, as he did in Ghost Rider #9 and last issue.

Yet another Jaws cash-in. It was the biggest movie money-maker in the world until "Star Wars", so a huge number of comics(and b&w mags)stuck a shark at least on the cover in hope of jacking up sales. DC also jumped on this really big(unlike Marvel, they ignored the previous incredibly popular film, "the Exorcist"). I have no idea if it really worked saleswise, and creatively it got utterly bizarre at times(especially that one cover with Superman getting chomped by Jaws).

That's a pretty great "next issue" blurb, I must admit
