Issue(s): Ghost Rider #27
Cover Date: Dev 77
Title: "At the mercy of the Manticore!"
Credits:
Jim Shooter - Writer
Don Perlin - Penciler
Dan Green - Inker

Review/plot:
Johnny Blaze is on the road and roaming the desert on his bike. After racing another motorcyclist named Brahma Bill, he winds up at the ranch that Hawkeye and the Two-Gun Kid are staying at. And they get attacked by an almost Kirby-esque looking villain called the Manticore.

It turns out the Manticore is an amputee, and whoever he's working for (we'll find out in Amazing Spider-Man #236) has promised him bionic legs if he'll kill Hawkeye.

During the fight, Ghost Rider uses his demonic appearance to scare the Manticore. It's only a bluff, but it kind of unnerves his allies.

Like last issue, a clean and simple book. Not great, but readable. And i liked the design for the Manticore a lot.

Chronological Placement Considerations: Issue #26 was pushed forward in time so it could be after Champions #17, so this issue has to move forward as well. Takes place before Hawkeye and Two-Gun Kid leave to rejoin the Avengers during the Korvac Saga.

Comments

Manticore's kidnapping of Hawkeye was done to supposedly force the Avengers to find the scientist who created the Hellcat outfit, but since A)that scientist was dead by that point, and B)Hellcat had been publicly seen working with distinctly non-Avenger superheroes(The Defenders), it looked like Shooter hadn't done his research too well.
