Ghost Rider #35

Issue(s): Ghost Rider #35
Cover Date: Apr 79
Title: "Deathrace!"
Credits:
Jim Starlin - Writer
Jim Starlin - Penciler
Stephen Leialoha, Al Milgrom, & Michael Nasser - Inker

Review/plot:
Another Jim Starlin one-shot (previous recent guest appearances include Hulk #222 and Amazing Spider-Man #187). It's a shame he didn't just have a regular series to write, because Starlin's writing is much better when he has time to stretch out a plot. These little one-offs are generally nice but nothing wonderful.

This is a horror-story type of issue, with Ghost Rider having to race Death Ryder (who may or may not be the Marvel manifestation of Death; it's supposed to be in the story, but he certainly doesn't act like Death normally does and MCP doesn't list him as Death).

Three races, and if Blaze loses either of the first two, which he does, someone dies.

The third race is for his own life, and Ghost Rider wins by cheating.

This story apparently required three inkers. Leialoha is credited this issue, but Milgrom and Nasser are listed as additional inkers in Ghost Rider #37 (according to UHBMCC).

Quality Rating: C

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: The majority of this issue is a (new material) flashback that takes place between Ghost Rider #13-14, but the framing sequence (basically Johnny remembering back to when this happened) dictates placement.

According to a contemporary review, P. Craig Russell was listed as one of the "friends".

It's a damn shame Starlin was only given a one-shot here. The story was quite and the art was awesome, IMHO. I'd put his rendering of GR up there with Mike Ploog and Carmine Infantino.

I meant to say the story was quite good and interesting, sorry.
