Review/plot:
This issue starts with Danny Ketch having a dream, talking to his Ghost Rider half.

The dream also shows his dead sister, and the villains Deathwatch and Blackout, and then we see Danny's father. This is the first we've heard from him (of course this isn't really him).

On his father's advice, he rejoins with Ghost Rider to fight the villains. But he loses the fight ("You can't stop us... because you're one of us") and then Danny wakes up screaming. Danny was sleeping on the couch next to his mother; both are in mourning after the death of Danny's sister. But Danny decides to go out and meet up with his girlfriend, Stacy.

Meanwhile, at Cypress Hills Community Action Group, a high priced consultant is hired to deal with the community's recent crime problems.

The consultant is a member of a team called HEART.

Some more murders occur in the neighborhood.

Danny later wakes up from another dream where Deathwatch and Blackout tell Danny that his father is one of them, and made Danny what he is. Danny goes out again, and this time his gas cap indicates that it's time to turn into Ghost Rider.

He finds a creature that was about to take a young woman.

And while Ghost Rider is fighting that, the young woman runs into Blackout.

The thing that Ghost Rider is fighting talks about Masque, the Morlock.

And is a bit confused and rant-y.

It turns into goo and gets away. The woman that ran into Blackout was apparently its sister.

A lot of this issue is really build-up for next issue (which includes a guest appearance by X-Factor, hence the use of Masque), and hopefully things become a bit clearer then. Right now it feels like a bunch of random things are being thrown at us, but i'm taking a wait and see approach.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 2 - first Heart Attack. First HEART.

Chronological Placement Considerations: Next issue guest-stars X-Factor and takes place after X-Tinction Agenda. I've pushed this issue after X-Tinction Agenda as well, although it's not clear if the events of this issue take place on the same night.

Interesting that Deathwatch and Blackout claim that Dan's father was one of them and made Dan who he is. It reads like Mackie had a different explanation for Dan's father than what eventually saw print. My personal theory is that Mackie originally intended Dan's father to be Centurious then changed his mind later. (Alternately, Mackie was just making everything up as he went along.)

@Michael: Interesting you should say that. You might like my theory here: https://fanfix.wordpress.com/2010/01/31/the-ghost-riders

The monster GR fights doesn’t turn into goo, that‘s a second monster. See the big monster mentioning „WE won’t let you take the girl“. I think the gooey thing is the mentioned „Alex“ and the big hulking monster apparently female, since Alex calls her sister - probably deformed by Masque.
.... that’s how I got the admittedly confusing scene.
