Review/plot:
The Hulk surfaces in Citrusville...

...and SHIELD authorizes Clay Quartermain to lead a strike force to capture him.

Doc Samson does most of the fighting, though.

Samson tells the SHIELD agents to fire the gas bazookas while he's fighting the Hulk, and the gas knocks out both of them.

The fact that Samson could have been killed from the gas but allowed SHIELD to fire anyway ends an annoying rivalry between Samson and Quartermain that had been going on in recent issues of this series.

Fun battle issue.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Enough time passes after the end of this issue that the Hulk and Samson are both revived and are prepared to start the experiment to help Glenn Talbot, but the Hulk shouldn't appear elsewhere in between.

References:

  • A footnote referencing all the crazy stuff that has happened in Citrusville just cites "the 22-issue course of the Man-Thing's own late lamented mag". The Mad Viking (Man-Thing #17-18) and Wundarr (Fear #17) are referenced along with more general references to the Man-Thing and Thog the Nether-Spawn.
  • Doc Samson fought the Hulk previously in Hulk #141 and Hulk #193.

Comments

The Citrusville folks seem unusually friendly this time.
