Hulk #255

Issue(s): Hulk #255
Cover Date: Jan 81
Title: "Thunder under the East River!"
Credits:
Bill Mantlo - Writer
Sal Buscema - Penciler
Sal Buscema - Inker

Review/plot:
The Hulk is on a bit of a rampage and Thor shows up. He must have something in his contract that says he gets the full treatment when he appears in the Hulk's book, including the inclusion of his logo.

Surprisingly, Thor is actually calm and appeasing at first, asking the Hulk why he's upset.

And the Hulk just turns around and whacks him, talking about how he doesn't need a reason because he's got power. It's a bit of reversal of the usual situation, where there's usually some misunderstanding on the part of the visiting hero. In this issue the Hulk definitely comes out looking like the bad guy.

It's a nicely drawn fight by Buscema...

...which takes them under the Brooklyn Battery tunnel. When they spring a hole in the roof of the tunnel and it starts to leak, Thor abandons the fight to hold up the roof. The Hulk climbs onto a boat, trying to get away from everyone.

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: The Hulk starts this issue sitting in New York city. I have him appearing in Defenders #93, and then kidnapped by Matrix Eight in Captain America #257 and brought to England, and then presumably he took a plane back to New York after the end of that issue. At the end of this issue, the Hulk gets on a boat bound for Israel, beginning his "world tour".

References:

  • There's a reference to the Hulk/Thor battle from Journey Into Mystery #112 (called Thor #112 here). That fight was actually a new-material flashback from Avengers #3.
