Iron Man #129

Issue(s): Iron Man #129
Cover Date: Dec 79
Title: "Dread night of the Dreadnought!"
Credits:
David Michelinie - Writer
D. Minds - Plot
Sal Buscema - Penciler
M. Hands - Inker

Review/plot:
I assume that's 'disparate minds' and 'many hands' in the credits (there's nothing in the book to indicate that it's 'dirty minds'). If this was a rush issue, it doesn't really suffer for it.

Starting off with a cute bit where Tony Stark runs a shareholder meeting for an audience of exactly one since Nick Fury & SHIELD own all of Stark International's stock...

...Tony makes it very clear that neither he nor his employees are going to be cooperative about the corporate takeover. Fury agrees to relinquish control. It doesn't really seem much like him and we'll definitely see that SHIELD doesn't give up (and does Fury really not know Stark is an alcoholic or is he just an absolutely awful person?)...

...but the corporate politics plot is interrupted by an attack on a facility called Project 13.

Fury heads off to investigate, and Tony follows a little later as Iron Man. It seems the facility (introduced in a recent Thor issue featuring a lot of guest stars) is under attack by a Dreadnought.

Fury is no match for the Steranko-designed robot, but Iron Man is able to defeat it after a long battle.

The Dreadnought says it is working for "the Director" Nothing is learned about the Director except it's confirmed that it's not related to Hydra, the original creators of the Dreadnoughts.

In the aftermath, Fury tries to feel out Iron Man to see if he agrees with SHIELD's goals for Stark International, but of course he doesn't have any better luck than he has with Tony.

Comments

Fnord, the "Director" the Dreadnought refers to is actually/would be Madame Masque.

Or rather a Bio-Duplicate, right? (Per later retcons.) We first glimpse her in Marvel Premiere #55 and we learn that it's her in Iron Man #138. I don't think she "appears" in this issue, from a tagging perspective.
