Iron Man #145

Issue(s): Iron Man #145
Cover Date: Apr 81
Title: "Raiders' rampage!"
Credits:
David Michelinie & Bob Layton - Plot
David Michelinie - Script
John Romita Jr. - Penciler
Bob Layton - Inker

Review/plot:
Tony Stark, accompanied by Rhodey, attends an electronics convention. Representatives from Cord Conglomerate, SHIELD, Williams Innovation, Cross Technological Enterprises, and Roxxon are also in attendance.

Edwin Cord, currently in danger of losing his contract with SHIELD thanks to his recent blunder in Daredevil, has three armored men, called Raiders, attack the convention, especially Iron Man.

He hopes that if Iron Man is defeated, SHIELD will be impressed. Iron Man isn't defeated, and SHIELD's reaction to the fact that Cord endangered civilians with his demonstration isn't quite what Cord expected anyway.

Fun little story. It's cool to see all the various high-tech Marvel companies under one roof.

It's amazing how flashy Romita's art isn't. Just solid storytelling.

I'm probably being overly PC, but one thing that bothers me just a little is the treatment of James Rhodes as a real lady killer. In this issue he's giving out his room number to a female reporter...

...and going cruising for Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders.

Comments

I don't get why Rhodey being a ladykiller is any more un-PC that Tony being a ladykiller.

Kveto, I don't know if you're aware of this but in America there's a racist stereotype of blacks as excessively sexual and particularly interested in white women.

@Michael, I'm pretty sure Rhodey has been seen hitting on black women as well. Tony even observes that Rhodey is behaving like him.
