Review/plot:
Iron Man's gauntlets are disabled and have to be removed due to problems relating to the technology that was added to them during Secret Wars. Rhodey rejects going to Stark for help, arguing that Stark needs to focus exclusively on his recovery from alcoholism. However, it's clear that there's more to Rhodey's refusal than that.

But he, Morley, and Cly need to raise a final $20,000 to start their business together, so when Regis Fusskey calls with a job, Rhodey takes it and gets a pair of simple red gloves to cover up the fact that his armor is incomplete.

The job is protecting a building where there's a fight going on between the original Taurus from the Zodiac, and the robot version that was created by Scorpio during Defenders #48-51. We don't learn the details of why they are fighting.

Despite the lack of repulsor beams, Iron Man is able to take the fight out of the building and stop to the robot Taurus.

With damage deductions, he only earns about $18,000, which they determine is close enough. They're moving to Silicon Valley, California.

Unfortunately, however, Iron Man's interference has made him a target for the Zodiac.

A solid story. Decent art.

Comments

The robot Zodiac were later deemed outright LMDs.

"They're moving to Silicon Valley, California." That would make sense for a start-up, but they seem to end up in the L.A. area. I wonder if they had forgotten about the Silicon Valley bit, or if they just didn't know where it is (the south of the Bay Area).

As I recall, there's some dialogue in this or the next issue that clarifies that the local mob hired the robot Taurus to take on the human one as part of some kind of turf struggle.

Using Gears Garvin is pretty cool - though I think his skin got quite a bit darker.
