Review/plot:
Union Jack has become so far removed from his original look and he's gotten all wrapped up in the Arthurian themes of the Knights of Pendragon, so it's easy to forget that he's the same character that debuted in Roger Stern and John Byrne's Captain America run. But this arc reminds us.

We have another Baron Blood appearing in the Doctor Strange series, but the original Baron Blood is back, and he's dressing up people in Union Jack's original costume to make hunting them more fun.

Meanwhile, as was intimated last issue, Mys-Tech has a stake in Grace Lexley's Omni company, and they don't like her new green initiatives.

So she's kidnapped by Ormond Wychwood, who is also responsible for reviving Blood. It turns out that in addition to being a Mys-Tech exec, he's also mixed up with the Bane, and he's trying to revive the Red Lord with a ritual that requires Blood to kill people. Grace is to be the final victim...

...but when she can't beat Baron Blood, she allows the Bane forces that used to possess her to return.

And she suggests that Union Jack would make a better sacrifice, and Baron Blood obviously agrees. So Grace calls Union Jack to lure him to the trap. Union Jack doesn't bring the rest of the Knights of Pendragon, deciding that this is a personal matter.

Blood almost bites Union Jack...

...but it turns out that Grace was faking.

Union Jack stakes Baron Blood...

...and throws his body into the ritual pit. Blood's impure body foils the ritual. Wychwood manages to escape, though.

Pretty basic, but it's nice to see that Union Jack's history isn't forgotten.

  • Baron Blood was thought killed after Invaders #9 (although he did come back later in the Invaders series).
  • He also returned in Captain America #253-254, which is also when Joey Chapman took up the mantle of Union Jack.
  • Discussing the possibility that Baron Blood might be back, Jacqueline Falsworth (Spitfire) says that stranger things have happened, including the fact that she was de-aged in Namor #12.

Comments

Wychwood claims that he found Baron Blood's corpse and revived him. How is that possible? His body was burned and his ashes were scattered.
