Review/plot:
As a social worker, the Falcon is investigating a case of child abuse. The victim is the 6 year old Janet Sorenson. But he's distracted by an explosion, which is the latest in a string. The police say that there is never evidence of bomb materials, so the Falcon suspects a super-powered perpetrator. The Falcon considers all the super-powered people who can manipulate fire, "from the Human Torch to the Super-Skrull". But the last name of Sorenson triggers a memory, and he calls Peggy Carter to ask her to run a search on the name of the girl's father, Terry, in the Avengers' files. And it turns out that Terry Sorenson is Equinox, an old villain who, when he was 17, had fire and ice powers. He was "supposedly cured" (see the Reference) but he lives in the vicinity of all the explosions.

Falcon arrives as Terry is about to hit his daughter again.

But it's pretty clear right from the start that Janet, not Terry, is responsible for the explosions.

Falcon helps Terry avoid jail and offers to help him deal with both Janet's powers and his abusive tendencies.

This was actually pretty decent (for an 8 page story with rough, rushed-looking art).

Quality Rating: C-

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: Three weeks pass before the final page of the story.

References:

  • Narration says that "The Wasp, Spider-Man, and Hank Pym had defeated and supposedly cured" Equinox. That's a reference to Marvel Team-Up #60. But in that story he was only defeated, and Pym actually said, "The boy isn't still human, Spider-Man. I wonder if he'll ever be.". And then Pym took Equinox away in hand-cuffs to turn him over to the police.

Comments

All these years later this is one of the eight page stories from MCP that I actually recall both fondly and vividly, probably because it stars the Falcon, a character I like, has an appearance by the semi-obscure but still cool villain Equinox, and it has early artwork by Steve Lieber, who went on the illustrate the acclaimed miniseries Whiteout.

This is one of those stories that will bug me because the writer clearly didn't pay attention to "Marvel time" (IE Franklin Richards was barely two when Equinox first appeared and yet here he's shown to be old enough to have a school-aged daughter, when contemporary Franklin was approx 6). You can say I'm being nitpicky but I can make the same argument using Kitty Pryde as the example. I'm guessing Gruenwald wasn't consulted on this one.

I think poor Franklin is the exception. He ages slower than anyone else in the Marvel Universe. He must take after his dad, who has aged backwards at times.
