Marvel Comics Presents #16 (Longshot & Ka-zar)Issue(s): Marvel Comics Presents #16 (Longshot & Ka-zar stories only) Longshot Ka-zar Mike Rockwitz - Assistant Editor Review/plot: ![]() Longshot is out chasing Kangaroos in the desert when he stumbles upon a guy doing some Dreamwalking. ![]() The guy tells Longshot how to do it ("Body asleep, mind awake"), and then Longshot returns to some people that look vaguely like the X-Men. ![]() Longshot can't wait to get them out of the house so he can try the Dreamtime thing. And when he does, he finds a baboon. ![]() He plays with the baboon... ![]() ...which turns into a chicken. ![]() During all the commotion, Longshot falls down the stairs and passes out, which is where the X-Men find him when they come home. ![]() It's nice to see Ann Nocenti return to Longshot. And you know if i wrote "He plays with a baboon that turns into a chicken" it's definitely an Ann Nocenti story. No idea what it means. Hey, it's Queen Leanne! ![]() ![]() And she's pregnant. ![]() Ka-Zar is rescuing her from some Swamp Men. Zabu was left behind with the Lemurians that asked Ka-Zar for help. But when Ka-Zar gets into trouble... ![]() ...Zabu comes running. ![]() But then it turns out that the Lemurians aren't happy that Leanne is pregnant... ![]() ...and the savages (i can call them that, because they're from the Savage Land) actually love her. ![]() Leanne dies giving birth. ![]() Zabu drives off the Lemurians, and Ka-Zar gives Leanne's baby to the Swamp Men to raise. I am somewhat surprised that Bruce Jones' Shanna story was pretty standalone while this Ka-Zar story uses a character from Jones' Ka-Zar series. Quality Rating: C Chronological Placement Considerations: The MCP place the X-Men story between Uncanny X-Men #238-239. The Ka-Zar story has to take place after Uncanny X-Men annual #12 and around the same time that Shanna has a solo adventure in Marvel Comics Presents #13. References:

CommentsA note about the character listings- Rogue and Madelyne Pryor don't both appear in this story. At the MCP, we couldn't agree on whether the redhead in those scans was supposed to be Rogue or Maddie, so we listed both of them. (It doesn't look like either of them, although there's no accent, so it arguably is closer to Maddie than Rogue.) Posted by: Michael | November 14, 2014 8:04 PM Yeah, i wasn't sure either, and the "I'll dance with you, Dazzler" didn't seem to be a good clue, but i figured based on placement they both must be around so i also tagged them both. I'd like to know how she came out of her coma and how she and the Lemurians survived the destruction of the Savage Land. Were they all in the bubble with M'rin? Posted by: fnord12 | November 14, 2014 10:04 PM "Born on a battlefield" is a Conan reference. Posted by: Mark Drummond | November 14, 2014 10:17 PM The green chicken-baboon is Altjira, the god of Dreamtime and chief god in Australian Aboriginal mythology, who is described as a large green bird with "emu's feet." He has a few later appearances as part of the Council of Godheads. If you Google Image search Altjira, the panel with Longshot throwing things at him is the first thing to pop up. Posted by: Faborst | November 14, 2014 10:26 PM Thanks, Faborst. I see he shows up again in the Van Lente & Pak's Hercules. I've tagged him as a character appearing. Posted by: fnord12 | November 14, 2014 10:53 PM I assumed that the Lemurians were all in the bubble with M'rin. But yeah, there's an entire ARMY of Lemurians and an army of Swamp People. Could they all fit in the bubble? Claremont tried to suggest that time passed quicker in the bubble but that's not enough to explain a huge population increase since Nereel's son was conceived before she entered the bubble and is still a kid. Posted by: Michael | November 14, 2014 11:17 PM That could be Rogue while Carol is in the driving seat as she often seemed to manage around this time... Posted by: Jay Demetrick | November 17, 2014 1:31 AM Is this the only time Nocenti wrote Longshot after that first miniseries? Posted by: S | August 7, 2016 9:05 PM Comments are now closed. |
