Review/plot:
More of this Fear Eater stuff from the Al Milgrom stories in the first four issues of Marvel Comics Presents that are helping the series to get off on the wrong foot.

Ummm, if i had to summarize these issues i would say that the Thing is infected by Fear Eater and forced to relive his worst fears, only to overcome them...

...and then Thor is infected by Fear Eater and forced to relive his worst fears, only to overcome them.

The Fear Eater could just infect a regular person and live off of their fears, but he's acquired a taste for the more delicious fear of the heroic, so he stubbornly continues to seek out super-heroes. His final target is Daredevil, who is the Man Without Fear, and so he starves to death.

Har de har har. Daredevil isn't literally without fear, right? They just call him that because he's such a daredevil. Oh well, whatever, at least it's over.

For the sake of completeness, i'll mention that Thor was fighting some guys in Mecha suits at the beginning of his portion.

Quality Rating: D

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: These two issues can fit together without a problem, and with the Fear Eater getting increasingly hungry it makes sense for his attacks to become more frequent. This should take place after the FF get back from their trip in Fantastic Four annual #21. Thor can appear while he's on Earth between Thor #395-396. Daredevil's appearance is context free (if we don't strictly interpret the fact that he refers to himself as a lawyer); i've got him in the same gap in his series as his Amazing Spider-Man annual #22 appearance.

  • While the Thing is under the Fear Eater's influence, the parasite turns the surrounding park goers into monsters. The Thing wonders if it's related to the events of Captain America #344 where people got turned into snakes.

Comments

According to the GREAT FEAR story later in DR. STRANGE, this is true; Daredevil is literally without fear.

It is possible for a human being to lose the ability to feel fear due to a brain injury. For one such case study see Sam Kean's "Tale of the Dueling Neurosurgeons".
