Marvel Comics Presents #66 (Volstagg)

Issue(s): Marvel Comics Presents #66 (Volstagg story only)
Cover Date: 1990
Title: "The thief of Asgard"
Credits:
Sholly Fisch - Writer
Sam Grainger - Penciler
Sam Grainger - Inker
Kelly Corvese - Assistant Editor
Terry Kavanagh - Editor

Review/plot:
The Enchantress is upset that Balder is not allowing the Enchantress to attend a reception of Karnilla the Norn Queen.

So she decides to steal a gem that Karnilla has given Balder as a gift. So Enchantress (way too easily) manipulates Volstagg into kissing her.

And, with him under her sway, she commands him to steal the gem. Of course, Volstagg is not your best choice of thief.

He winds up leading all of the Asgardians to the Enchantress.

A silly story, but Sam Grainger's cartoon-y art makes it work.

Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 1

Chronological Placement Considerations: This takes place in "the days before the Egyptian Wars had come to Asgard, when Balder ruled the shining land". I've placed this after Balder's coronation in Thor #371-372.

References:

  • I assume the mention of the Egyptian Wars is a reference to the story culminating in Thor #396-400.

Crossover: N/A

Continuity Insert? N

My Reprint: N/A

Characters Appearing: Balder, Enchantress, Fandral, Hogun, Karnilla, Volstagg

interesting art on this one. Very Saturday morning cartoons.

This looks to be Sam Grainger's last (posthumous) work. He had already died by the time it saw publication.

The story's title must have been taken from Achmed Abdullah's 1924 novel "The Thief of Baghdad", which has been filmed 7 times, most notably in 1940 (IIRC) starring Sabu and Conrad Veidt. The art here has an Archie or Harvey Comics feel, like Richie Rich or Archie himself put on a Volstagg costume.
